Despite a score by Ryan Miller of the indie-rock band Guster, nothing in the 2012 indie sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed suggested a stage musical would be a natural next step. Indeed, Miller and Nick Blaemire, who’s adapted Derek Connolly’s original screenplay, haven’t found a way to flesh out the wisp of a story in a way that makes sense either musically or as a work of theater. Many of the songs end abruptly, as if someone has just lifted the needle on the record player and left the room to do something else.
