Jason Robert Brown’s new musical The Connector boasts one of his very best scores, but Jonathan Marc Sherman’s fact-based book regurgitates decades-old scandals about journalists like Stephen Glass and Jayson Blair in a way that muddles his message. Lead performers Ben Levi Ross, as a fidgety fabulist in the Stephen Glass mold, and Hannah Cruz, as an ambitious working-class journalist thwarted by Old Boys Club favoritism, deliver standout vocal performances. (And Scott Bakula brings a grizzled charm to a supporting role as an Old School journo.)
